Then, I decide to organise a visit to the city on my own. Always the same goal: finding something positive in the negative.
The day unfolds peacefully, between exercise, a conference and sunbathing, when Michel comes to find me and invites me to join him at a “Diamond” cocktail reception. This event is reserved for passengers who have completed several cruises. My friend Lyrie had access to it… I am still only “Gold.”
The purpose of the event is to present future cruises, offering a discount to those who book first, both as an incentive and as a way of rewarding passengers for their loyalty.

For the occasion, and to honour my host, I wear a beautiful gold and red dress, a perfect choice, as the evening, organised on deck at sunset, is all about la dolce vita.
We are welcomed by the crew with a glass of prosecco before taking our seats in a huge amphitheatre. I am amazed by the impressive number of Diamond members.
While talking with Michel, I learn that some passengers embark on a world cruise every single year. He even met people who were already on their seventh world cruise… wow.
Although the presentation is polished and the speeches carefully crafted, I do not feel ready to book another cruise for 2027, tempting as the offer may be.
What I really dream about instead is a cruise to Greenland in 2028… and why not with Ponant?
So I listen, I discover, but for now, the desire simply is not there yet.

Since I came aboard this ship, nothing has gone according to plan. Every day has brought its share of surprises, sometimes pleasant, sometimes unsettling.
That evening, however, everything seemed perfectly planned: a stylish cocktail reception, dinner at the restaurant, and then a dolce vita evening. So I had dressed accordingly. An elegant dress, ten-centimetre gold heels, the outfit of a woman simply following the programme that had been announced.
But once again, nothing went as expected.
The cocktail had barely ended when I headed straight to the restaurant for dinner… only to find myself sitting alone at the table once again. Alone. Oops.
A message from Claire, my Canadian friend, had slipped my mind: they had finally decided to have dinner at the buffet on Deck 13. White tablecloths, a Costa Rica-themed evening. Too late.
So there I was, making my way to the buffet on Deck 13, dressed in an outfit that clearly had not been chosen for that setting. The issue was not elegance itself, but the place.

At the buffet, the unwritten rules are different. People wear sportswear, casual, practical clothes, almost designed to go unnoticed. You come there to eat, not to be seen.
In fact, honestly, since the beginning of the cruise, I had only noticed one woman who was truly elegant in that space.
And there I was, arriving alone in an evening dress. In my heels, I stand 1.85 metres tall. I tower above most people. I naturally draw attention. There is simply no way for me to blend into the background, even if I wanted to.
My outfit was not inappropriate in itself; it was simply out of place. Too elegant for a setting where discretion seemed to be the norm.
The looks began. They drifted towards me, lingered, judged. They were not curious glances, but loaded ones. A quiet jealousy, sometimes almost hostile, directed not at the dress itself, but at what it seemed to represent.
They no longer felt like rifles pointed at me, but machine guns.
At that precise moment, I felt like the woman everyone wanted to bring down.
It is a feeling I know well. A constant exposure that I sometimes manage with confidence, but which, at other times, strikes me head-on.
That evening, I carried it with my head held high, just like my shoulders. Silent, yet undeniably real.
Paragraph
Once again, I made my way alone to the amphitheatre to watch a ventriloquist’s performance. There, I met a French couple I had known since 2025, who confirmed what I had already suspected: yes… this ventriloquist was another case of déjà vu.

The idea of returning straight to my cabin crosses my mind. To withdraw. To relax. And then I think about the dolce vita evening waiting for me later on Deck 13. So I stay. Not out of overwhelming enthusiasm, but out of curiosity. Out of loyalty to the programme I had promised myself I would experience to the very end. And perhaps also because, despite everything, I still wanted to give the evening a chance to surprise me.
With Michel still at dinner, and no news from my two Québécois couples or my French friends, I eventually decide to head to Deck 13 on my own.
The dolce vita evening is in full swing. Colourful decorations light up the space, and the buffet is absolutely spectacular: beautifully carved fruit, delicate cream-based desserts, an endless variety of pastries… Everything is tempting, almost excessive.
And yet, I resist. Instead, I choose to capture the moment on video.
I share a few dances with a friend from Montpellier, but before long… fatigue catches up with me. Well, ten-centimetre heels do come at a price.
With Michel still nowhere to be seen, I eventually decide to return to my cabin.
After that evening, one thing becomes clear to me: on this kind of ship, there is an unwritten rule.
Conform, and everything will be fine.
Be discreet, be accompanied, fit the norm, and no one will notice you.
But the moment you step outside that framework—alone, elegantly dressed, tall, confident—you immediately become visible.
And that visibility makes some people uncomfortable.
All the best.

On this second day at sea, the night has washed away the tensions of the previous evening. So I arrive at breakfast with a light heart, especially as the sun is shining over the promenade deck, even though a strong wind is blowing.
Despite that, I decide to set off on a walk with one goal in mind: reaching my 10,000 steps before the end of the day.
Then comes Massimo’s conference on San Diego, an appointment I would not miss for anything in the world. Especially since he is due to give us valuable information about our arrival on American soil.
The name alone is enough to make me dream: San Diego… California’s light, the Pacific Ocean, palm trees, that promise of the American West and freedom.
I settle into my seat, attentive, allowing my mind to travel ahead of the ship. I can already picture the harbour, the different atmosphere, that unique feeling of setting foot on American soil after days at sea.
Then comes lunch at the restaurant with Michel.

On this second day at sea, the night has washed away the tensions of the previous evening. I arrive at breakfast with a light heart, especially as the morning sun bathes the promenade deck, even though a strong wind is blowing across it.
Despite the breeze, I decide to head out for a walk with one goal in mind: reaching my 10,000 daily steps before the day is over.
Then comes Massimo’s conference on San Diego, a session I would not miss for anything in the world. He is due to give us valuable information about our upcoming arrival on American soil.
The name alone is enough to spark my imagination: San Diego… California’s golden light, the Pacific Ocean, rows of palm trees, that promise of the American West and a sense of freedom.
I take my seat, fully attentive, letting my thoughts travel ahead of the ship. I can already picture the harbour, the different atmosphere, and that unique feeling of setting foot in the United States after so many days at sea.
Afterwards, I meet Michel for lunch at the restaurant.

When I arrived at reception, I asked to speak with a hostess who spoke both French and Spanish. My request was simple: I wanted her to call the dental clinic and make an appointment for 30 January in Puerto Vallarta.
But it was impossible to use the MSC telephone. So I handed over my own phone instead. The French hostess, who did not speak Spanish, called over her supervisor. I had to insist for quite some time before finally getting an answer.
The clinic’s schedule was completely full… but if I arrived at exactly 9:00 a.m., they would try to fit me in between two appointments.
Nothing was written down. No confirmation. Just a verbal promise.
Needless to say, I did not feel particularly reassured. The thought of this improvised appointment, in a country I did not know, left me with a slight knot in my stomach.
Still, I left the reception desk determined not to let this worry spoil the gentle beauty of the moment, and I went to enjoy a little more of the golden late-afternoon sunshine.
The evening, however, unfolded in a much lighter atmosphere. Between dinner at the restaurant and the show at the amphitheatre, Musica in Maschera – Estrellas Latinas, time seemed to stand still.
I even convinced one of the Canadian couples, Edwige and her husband, to come along with me. The singers’ voices, the richness of the instruments, the energy on stage… everything invited relaxation and escape. It was a genuine moment to breathe, like an enchanted interlude far removed from my worries about the following day.
On the way out, I ran into Anya, who suggested we continue the evening dancing to ABBA songs. I declined, preferring to stay and chat with Edwige.
We spoke about distant horizons, about my perhaps slightly crazy dream of joining an MSC World Cruise in 2028, but only for one leg of the journey. As our conversation unfolded, names that inspired dreams followed one another: India, Peru, Nouméa… so many places I had never seen, so many promises of discovery.
I eventually stopped by the MSC Future Cruises desk, full of hope.

The answer was clear: yes, it would be possible to book individual legs of the World Cruise in 2027, but not in 2028.
I left the desk feeling slightly disappointed, wished my friends a good night, and returned to my cabin, my thoughts divided between dreams of distant destinations… and the growing apprehension of the dental appointment that was now drawing near.

On this final day at sea, I have to admit that the prospect of this unconfirmed appointment had somewhat disturbed my sleep. The thought was still lingering in my mind when I woke up, like a small cloud drifting across an otherwise blue sky.
After breakfast, I stopped by the ONYX desk to register my cruise card in preparation for our arrival in San Diego, then attended Massimo’s conference on Frida. Afterwards, I decided to return to the reception desk, hoping that this time I would finally receive a clear answer… or at least some reassurance.
Back at reception, I truly believed I would be able to clarify the situation. I had prepared everything: the text of my request, carefully written in French and then translated into Spanish. My objective was simple: to confirm a medical appointment that had only been arranged verbally for 9:00 a.m. the following morning.
So I asked once again to speak with a hostess who spoke both French and Spanish. One was called over.
Feeling reassured, I explained my situation.
Her response immediately caught me off guard: they would hand me the MSC telephone… but I would have to call the clinic myself.
For a moment, I was speechless.
Call a Mexican dental clinic myself, in a country where I did not speak the language, simply to confirm a medical appointment?
I tried to explain that I did not speak Spanish, and that the previous day someone at reception had kindly helped me.

The answer was unequivocal.
“I’m sorry, Madam, but that’s not possible. We are not authorised to make that kind of call.”
At that moment, I felt genuinely helpless. This was not an ordinary appointment, nor a restaurant reservation or a tourist booking. It was a medical appointment, something important to me, and a source of anxiety ever since the day before.
I was then asked to explain my request in English instead.
The hostess dialled the number on the MSC telephone and handed me the receiver.
I explained, as best I could in English, why I was calling and asked them to confirm my appointment.
Fortunately, the clinic finally confirmed that they would see me the following morning at 9:00 a.m.
At that moment, all I really felt was relief.

Looking back, however, one question remained. On a four-star cruise ship welcoming guests from all over the world, could one not expect a little more compassion when faced with a medical situation?
I was not asking for special treatment. Just a little help… at the moment I needed it most.
I was so upset that I somehow managed to lose my cruise card. So I had to return to the reception desk yet again to have a new one issued, as though the morning had not already been exhausting enough.
To calm myself down, I decided to record a video for my followers. Putting words to what I was experiencing helped ease the tension.
Then came lunch: a fresh salad, a little papaya, simple, light flavours that were exactly what I needed.
At last, I was able to stretch out and fully enjoy my sunbath. In that moment, the sea, the warmth, and the tranquillity slowly reclaimed their place, and I could feel my serenity returning, minute by minute.
Before heading to dinner, I stopped by the Excursions Desk to book Whale Watching for our first day in San Diego. I had no desire to stay aboard the ship we had already spent so many days at sea.
What made me smile was that this became the very first topic of conversation over dinner with my two Québécois couples: just how many days would we actually spend at sea during this 133-day World Cruise?

The answer surprised all of us: seventy-nine days.
An astonishing number… almost overwhelming.
The conversation then turned to my dental appointment scheduled for the following morning.
I was deeply touched when Claire said to me,
“If I hadn’t already booked an excursion, I would have come with you.”
Such a simple sentence, yet such a beautiful gesture of friendship.
Later that evening, everyone went off to enjoy their own activities.
As for me, I headed to the theatre.
What a wonderful performance. Beautiful renditions of famous songs, breathtaking costumes, and dancers radiating elegance, grace, and energy.
Eventually, I returned to my cabin with stars in my eyes and a light heart, still carried away by the magic of the evening.

30 January 2026 – Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

This morning meant so much to me that it had been on my mind from the moment I woke up. At exactly 9:00 a.m., they were due to fix my tooth back into place… or rather, the post supporting it.
It was the first time I had found myself alone in a city I did not know. A slight sense of apprehension lingered in the background, discreet but very real.
Fortunately, I had Internet access outside the ship, which made everything much easier, especially when it came to ordering Ubers to and from the clinic.
Let me reassure you: everything went perfectly well.
Beyond the warm welcome, I met an exceptionally professional dentist, gentle, reassuring, and attentive. I left with a smile on my face, relieved and full of confidence.
Between the quality of the treatment and the price, I even decided to give the clinic a little publicity. Good experiences deserve to be shared.
After doing a little shopping, I chose to wander through this beautiful city in search of a few landmarks.
Puerto Vallarta gradually revealed itself with every step, generous, bright, and full of charm.
I passed a magnificent bell tower rising gracefully towards the sky, as though watching over the city with elegance and serenity.
A little farther on, I stopped in front of an engraving bearing the name Puerto Vallarta, like a proud signature carved into stone, preserving the identity and history of the place.
My attention was then drawn to a statue of a dolphin, a symbol of freedom and of the city’s deep connection with the ocean. It brought a touch of freshness and poetry to an already delightful walk.
I continued towards the marina, where the calm of the water contrasted with the gentle activity around it. The boats swayed softly on the waves, while the sunlight shimmered across the sea. Everything invited contemplation.
I walked without haste, carried along by the peaceful atmosphere, savouring each moment of this discovery like a gift offered to me by Puerto Vallarta.
It was 1:00 p.m.

Knowing that the ship was due to leave the pier at 5:00 p.m., I found myself torn between two thoughts. On the one hand: you still have a little time enjoy it. On the other: it would probably be wiser to head back now. You never know.
As it turned out… I was right.
I have always been someone who prefers to anticipate rather than take risks.
So I decided to order an Uber from the marina.
At first, the app showed a fifteen-minute wait… then twenty. I cancelled the ride and requested another.
The exact same thing happened.
No one came.
A quiet sense of anxiety began to creep in.
How am I going to get back?
Especially since I wasn’t wearing trainers, and walking such a long distance simply wasn’t a realistic option.
That was when I met a kind elderly lady.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “Walk over to Starbucks. You’ll find plenty of taxis there.”
I explained that I needed to get back to the cruise terminal.
She frowned.
“Today, that could be difficult… everything is blocked. Now I understand why the Ubers aren’t accepting your requests.”
She was right.
I tried the first taxi, driven by an elderly man.
A firm refusal.
It was impossible to reach the port.
The second taxi gave me exactly the same answer.

Then I spotted a third taxi, driven by a much younger man who looked confident and resourceful. I climbed into the front seat and, determined, explained my situation.
“I absolutely have to get back to the cruise terminal. My ship is waiting for me.”
In excellent English, he explained that the city was gridlocked because of demonstrations and that traffic had come to a complete standstill.
So, feeling a little bold, I made him an offer.
“You’re young, and I can see you’re good at finding solutions. I’ll give you forty dollars if you can get me there.”
He paused for a moment…
Then he smiled.
“Deal.”
“You’ve just come from the dental clinic, haven’t you?”
I nodded.
“Then lie down on the back seat… and we’ll try to get through the two roadblocks.”

And believe it or not… it worked.
We made it through both roadblocks without any trouble.
There I was, driving through areas completely blocked by the demonstrations, where no other vehicles were allowed to pass. It all felt almost surreal.
At last, I arrived back at the ship around 2:00 p.m., relieved and, if I’m honest, rather proud of this unexpected little adventure.
Of course, lunch service was already over, but a waiter I know well greeted me warmly and prepared a large bowl of fromage blanc just for me.
Things always seem to work out in the end… especially when you stay calm and trust the people you meet along the way.
I spent a little more time enjoying the last rays of sunshine with a good book in my hands.
No exercise today. This day had completely worn me out… although I still managed to walk 12,000 steps.
Then came dinner with my Canadian friends.
As always, it was a pleasure to see them again and share those simple, heartwarming moments together.
The maître d’hôtel, ever so attentive, was especially thoughtful when I explained that I could only chew on one side of my mouth.
He recommended a soup, steamed fish, and a hazelnut ice cream.
Perfect.
Absolutely exceptional.
At 8:00 p.m., I headed to the theatre to attend a concert of traditional Mexican music.
But after about fifteen minutes, I decided to return to my cabin instead.
The following morning, an excursion was scheduled for 7:50 a.m., and I also had to adjust to another one-hour time change.
A few more pages of my book… and, little by little, my eyes began to close.

31 January 2026 – Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Our meeting point was the Tiger Bar at 7:30 a.m.
Just enough time for breakfast and to record a quick video for my followers before joining Claire and Bob, my Canadian friends. The atmosphere was friendly, almost festive, even though several armed police officers watched discreetly over the area.
After taking a few photographs, capturing memories in the soft morning light, I boarded my coach.
Two hours later, we arrived at Tierra Sagrada Ranch.
The scenery along the way had unfolded gently before us—wild, peaceful, and almost meditative—as though nature itself were preparing us for the adventure ahead.

The moment we arrived at the ranch, a very special atmosphere surrounded us.
The place was filled with natural beauty and reflected the rich heritage of Baja California.
From the very first moments, it felt like an escape from everyday life.
We were first invited to meet our camels, learn their names, and establish that first connection before climbing onto their backs and setting off on our journey.
We crossed the Cabo desert, surrounded by vast, untamed landscapes and soothing silence, before riding alongside the Pacific Ocean.
The scenery was simply breathtaking.

The sea breeze brushed gently against my face, while the rhythmic sound of the waves accompanied our slow progress.
It was one of those rare moments when time seems to stand still.
Quite simply, it was extraordinary.
After this unforgettable ride came a typically Mexican lunch, shared in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere: tacos, refried beans, and all the generous flavours that make Mexican cuisine so memorable.
It was absolutely delicious.
Dessert followed, and then came the tequila tasting.
Several tequilas, in fact.
For someone who never drinks alcohol, it was quite an experience, but the atmosphere was so cheerful that it quickly became another memorable part of the day.
The adventure continued aboard a gigantic off-road truck an impressive machine and tremendous fun—before we returned to the coach.
Two more hours on the road gave me time to relive everything I had experienced that day.
It had been an intense, unforgettable adventure.
A magical interlude that will remain etched in my memory forever.

But the magic of the day did not end there.
On the journey back, chance or perhaps fate—placed me beside Shawn and Brenda, the friends of my Canadian friends whom I had met only that morning.
Claire knows that I write, that I collect stories the way others gather rare flowers.
She had told them.
And so, almost shyly, they offered me theirs.
Shawn is American.
Brenda is from South Korea.
In 2024, they both boarded the MSC World Cruise separately. She was travelling with friends; he had embarked alone.
They both joined the ship in Genoa, complete strangers, with no idea that their lives were about to become intertwined.
Ten days later, chance brought them together on the same excursion.
Not on the same coach…
But on the same journey.
During one of the stops, Shawn saw her.
Time seemed to slow.
He was instantly captivated.
He had noticed her before, the way one notices a distant light without truly understanding why it draws the eye. But this time, something was different. Something quiet yet irresistible settled inside him.
Neither of them dared make the first move.
So he listened to the conversations around him, drifting a little closer, hoping for an opportunity.
Then one day, back on the ship, their eyes truly met.
They started talking.
And suddenly, everything felt effortless.
Shawn was completely spellbound by Brenda.
She felt exactly the same.
It was love at first sight—silent, profound, and filled with light.
That very evening, he invited her for a cocktail.
Then for dinner.
From that moment on, they were inseparable.
Shawn had originally planned to sail only one segment of the World Cruise.
But how do you leave when love has just found you?
So he extended his voyage.
One more leg.
Then another.
Time no longer mattered when their hearts were beating in perfect harmony.
Eventually, however, reality caught up with them.
He returned to the United States.
She flew back to South Korea.
But their story did not end there.
It crossed oceans.
It defied time zones.
It grew between two continents.
Again and again, they found their way back to one another, sharing their lives equally between their two worlds, guided by the quiet certainty that they were meant to be together.

In 2025, Shawn asked Brenda to marry him.
And today, here they are, together on the 2026 World Cruise…
United by chance, courage, and love.
On their honeymoon.
At dinner, I reunited with my two Canadian couples. Jokes flew around the table, laughter echoed through the restaurant. We all come from different backgrounds, each with our own story, and yet… we get along so effortlessly.
As so often happens, we were once again the last to leave the table, lingering over the conversation, reluctant to let the evening end.
Then, true to my usual routine, I made my way alone to the theatre.
Tonight, for the second time, I had the pleasure of watching the internationally renowned ventriloquist, Serge Massot.
And then came another unexpected joy.
I ran into Christophe and his wife.
They congratulated me on my book, They Called Her the Parisian Pin-Up.
Only then did I discover that they were the ones who had been reading it.
They even embraced me.
“What a life you’ve had, Annick… what incredible courage. We had imagined you to be rather superficial, but reading your book made us understand the life you’ve built and everything you’ve lived through. You’ve suffered so much. Congratulations once again on such a remarkable book.”

I was moved to tears.
Just then, a message from Michel appeared on my phone. He invited me to join him at the Mexican-themed party.
Once again, I politely declined.
Tomorrow, I promised myself.

27 to 29 January 2026 – At Sea This first day at sea gets off to a chaotic start when I discover, in a note slipped under my cabin door, that my MSC excursion in Puerto Vallarta has been cancelled… There had already been Hilo, and now Mexico. At first, I am annoyed.
